The PPGQ is rated by CAPES level 7, considered a program of excellence, with the following assessment of CAPES Evaluation Committee in 2007: "consolidated program with very qualified scientific production. Some permanent faculty of the Program have national and international leadership. The Program is a world leading position in the field of chemistry, according to the Web of Science. "The PPGQ has important local and regional insertion supplying teachers to several universities in the South (FURG, UFPEL, UNIPAMPA, UNISC, UPF, URI, UNICRUZ, UNIJUI) and some of its graduates are part of the faculty at major universities such as USP SP, UFSC and UFRGS. Graduates of PPGQ work in companies and research institutes in the country and abroad. The Federal University of Santa Maria pioneered the internalization of higher education in Brazil, at a time when there were only universities in state capitals. The UFSM has today in full development, courses, programs and projects in various areas of human knowledge. More than 40 undergraduate and 36 post-graduate programs stricto sensu, comprising 35 Academic Masters Courses, 1 Master's Vocational and 17 Doctoral courses, all meeting the most diversified regional demand requests (national, international, MERCOSUR ).
In the Rio Grande do Sul State there are four Graduate Programs in Chemistry allocated in federal universities (Federal University of Santa Maria, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul Federal University of Rio Grande and the Federal University of Pelotas). The current Graduate in Chemistry Program, created in 1985, initially as Master in Chemistry, has formed teachers for higher education and researchers to work in research institutions and industries. Considering that the main clientele PPGQ consists of graduates of UFSM and higher education institutions from the South, the PPGQ has helped decisively in the setting of high scientific qualification researchers in various Brazilian institutions. Currently, PPGQ has many foreign students, especially TWAS / CNPq Asia scholars, but also of Latin American countries. The increase in PPGQ of exchanges with foreign research groups has grown tremendously, indicating the maturing of Research Groups PPGQ. Several students have held internships short and long term overseas allowing a more solid and broad education, enabling high-quality research and expansion of cooperation. Several researchers PPGQ have been invited to give lectures at major events in Brazil and abroad.
